RENEW Respond to Lisbon Referendum Vote

The ratification of the recent Lisbon Treaty Referendum will have serious implications for the Irish people. RENEW believe that the people were not presented with the facts relating to the Lisbon Treaty, but with opinions only.  Therefore if the Government continue with the ratification process they will be committing an act of treason.  The Irish people did not vote 'yes' to the Lisbon Treaty, they voted instead out of fear for their jobs and the economy.

The Irish Constitution places its people under the protection of the Blessed Trinity and no one gave the Government the right to take that from them.  The Lisbon Treaty is a purely humanist, secular construct that refuses to recognise God and the Christian roots of its member states. We will be forced to live by its secular values and we see this happening with the emergence of the Civil Partnership Bill.  This will have serious implications on the lives of Catholics and Christians and on traditional marriage and the family unit.

The people who have voiced their concerns about the Lisbon Treaty in regards to the family and other social issues, were told they had nothing to fear and that they were scaremongering.  But we know now that we have a great deal to fear.

RENEW will continue to focus on the implications of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and will hold the Government to account for the 'legal guarantees' promised during the Lisbon II campaign.
